This quirky comedy, tightly written and directed by David Finley, takes place on a day that holds unexplained past significance for a writer named Eddie (Timothy Walker). On top of that, he has to deal with his fed-up girlfriend Charlotte (Megan Murphy), losing his job, his brutal AA sponsor (John Dickie) and a name-dropping psychiatrist (John Illingworth). The exceptional cast instinctively play off each other, with extra kudos to Murphy, who ensures that her tightly wound, lisping Charlotte retains some dignity. Finley also includes some charming physical comedy, turning actor Ryan Giesen into a human sandwich board that gets tons of laughs.

SECOND REVIEW (way to go Tim's calves)
I walked down St. George Street to the Robert Gill Theatre to see Donny's Day, "a comedy about a guy named Eddie". The play an hilarious comedy that I recommend. A very funny tale of Eddie (Timothy Walker) an alcoholic (1 year sober) who is having a very, very, very bad day. Despite his flaws, Eddie is a fun guy, if commitment shy. (Shh...I think actor, Timothy Walker has great calves.) Other characters in the play include Eddie's girlfriend, his shrink (strongly paid by John Illingworth), his sponsor, and an acquaintance/friend. Shout out to "Sandwich Board Guy", Ryan Giesen.

4 OUT OF 5 STARS SAYS FIRST REVIEW
BY DAMIAN ROGERS FOR EYE WEEKLY
The day that this well-written and funny play chronicles actually belongs to Eddie (Timothy Walker), and Eddie is having a very shouty day indeed. He’s been fired from his lacklustre job only to be serially dumped by his shrill (and yet strangely lisping) girlfriend, his borderline-abusive AA sponsor and his wildly unorthodox therapist, sending him into the open, grasping arms of his enabling bartender. Walker invests sad-sack Eddie with enough dry snark to keep him afloat through one shitstorm after another while the whole cast digs happily into David Finley’s script, which is both crisp and clever. It’s a testament to the production’s darkly playful humour that it never descends into bitterness, even when the message is that only animals are worthy companions.

Among the offerings at this year’s Fringe Theatre Festival is a new play by Dora Mavor Moore Award-winning playwright, David Finley.
Donny’s Day is a broad comedy about one day in the life of Eddie Kowalski (performed by Timothy Walker) - an alcoholic, commitment-phobic, chronically procrastinating, wannabe writer wiseass. Yes, Eddie has issues. And they all come out as he endures the day from hell. Along the way, we meet his girlfriend (Megan Murphy), his AA sponsor (John Dickie, 40-year veteran of the Toronto music scene making his return to the stage after a lengthy absence), his psychiatrist (John Illingworth) and his erstwhile bartender, Pete (Ryan Giesen).
David won the 2005 Dora for outstanding New Musical for “Aladdin”. He was nominated for the same award in 2006 for “Snow White and the Group of Seven.” This will be his theatrical directing debut.
Donny’s Day plays at the Robert Gill Theater, 214 College Street, 3rd Floor (St. George St. entrance). The Fringe Festival runs July 1-12.
